Visas

Zimbabwe, Zambia, & Botswana: one visa to cover all three at airport
Tanzania visa at airport
Egypt visa at airport

Zimbabwe Visa Requirements

South African passport holders do not require a visa to visit Zimbabwe. Most nationalities, including UK, USA, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders, require a visa to enter Zimbabwe which can be obtained upon arrival or in advance from an embassy.

KAZA Visa

Zimbabwe and Zambia have re-introduced the popular, and much-awaited KAZA (Kavango-Zambezi) “Uni-Visa”, which allows visitors to stay in either (or both) countries for up to 30 days for a single payment of US$50.

The UniVisa is available at Harare, Victoria Falls, Lusaka and Livingstone International airports, the Victoria Falls land border (Zimbabwe/Zambia) and the Kazungula land border (Zimbabwe, Zambia, & Botswana).

Zambia Visa Requirements

South African passport holders do not require a visa to visit Zambia. Most nationalities, including UK, USA, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders, require a visa to enter Zambia which can be obtained upon arrival.

Tanzania Visa Requirements

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tanzania. UK, USA, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders can get a visa, which is valid for 3 months, upon arrival or apply for an e-visa before you travel. South African passport holders do not require a visa to visit Tanzania for up to 90 days.

Botswana Visa Requirements

Most nationalities, including UK, USA, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and South African passport holders, do not require a visa to visit Botswana for up to 90 days.

Currencies

“I am in Zimbabwe for one week now and I have used just US$. Try to pay everything you can by credit card and souvenirs, taxis, tips in US$. Bring small US$ denominations and be prepared to negotiate the taxi cost and the craft souvenir prices.”  – TripAdvisor User

1 USD = 361 ZDW (Zimbabwean Dollar)
1 USD = 27.94 Kwacha (Zambia Dollars)

In Botswana the preferred currency in Botswana being Botswana pula.
1 USD = 13.63 BWP (Botswana Pula)

Both Tanzanian shillings and US dollars are accepted as cash for payment almost everywhere.
“For the most part you need to use either US Dollars or the local currency T Shillings. I always advise using T Shilling while you are there, you will get the best rates from this. Can you use dollars, sure, but some will discount them heavily; for example if something was 1,000 T Shillings, they might accept $1 for it (when the exchange rate is actually 1,375 TSh = $1) so that’s over a 30% discount for using dollars.”  – TripAdvisor User

1 USD = 2,545.83 TZS (Tanzania Shilling)

All hard currencies are welcome but dollars are perhaps more welcome than others. In any case, if you’re coming from the US, dollars are the obvious choice. The airport bank where you buy visas will change money at reasonable rates, maybe not quite as reasonable as downtown banks but reasonable nonetheless.

1 USD = 50.22 EGP (Egyptian Pound)

Tipping Suggestions

Keep In Mind

Tipping is a sensitive issue, but there is no need to feel embarrassed. It’s a normal part of a service industry, as it is in restaurants in many countries. Just remember that relatively affluent visitors can have a big impact on the local economy: tipping does influence the economic and social balance – so keep that in mind when you tip the staff during your safari

Most camps and safari lodges have a ‘tip box’, and often their own tipping policy. Sometimes the ‘tip box’ will be for all the staff; sometimes it’ll be for the staff excluding the guides; occasionally it’ll be arranged differently.

Tipping is an essential part of the Egyptian economy, and it is a way to supplement the low wages that many service workers receive. In many cases, tips can make up a significant portion of a worker’s income. As a tourist, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of those who provide you with services by tipping generously.

Moreover, tipping is also a way to build relationships and establish trust with locals. By showing appreciation for their services, you are more likely to receive better treatment and service in return.

Zimbabwe

The normal practice is to tip in cash, and as US Dollars are currently Zimbabwe’s official currency this is the best currency to tip in. However, UK Sterling, Euros and Rand will also be happily accepted.

When to tip

Occasionally we get asked when is the right time to give the tips. There are a few options:

After each activity
At the end of each day
At the end of your stay

General rule of thumb: just tip once, always at the end of your stay at each safari camp or lodge. Not at the end of each activity, or each day.

Guides wouldn’t expect you to tip after each of the daily activities, as it could create the impression that the guides need to ‘perform’ for the person giving the tips, which can distort the relationship between them and the other guests. Imagine the position other guests might find themselves in should you be offering tips this frequently and they were not.

How much to tip

Tipping in Zimbabwe is not compulsory but always appreciated, and the amount will always depend on your own opinion and personal satisfaction. Based on our own experiences, and discussion with camp managers, we would suggest the following amounts as a rough guide:

  • US$10-20 per guest per day for a group guide
  • US$20-40 per guest per day for a private guide
  • US$10-20 per guest per day for general staff

To put these suggestions in perspective, bear in mind that the Gross National Income (GNI) in Zimbabwe is about US$5.26 per person per day.

Zambia

We do get asked if it’s possible to tip by credit card. This is not normal practice, and many safari camps in Zambia won’t be able to process this, so we would recommend that you take cash for tipping. You’ll find that this is most common anyway, with the preferred currency being US dollars, easily exchanged into Zambian kwacha by camp staff if necessary.

We can only offer our own advice on this from our experiences in Zambia. Tipping is not compulsory but always appreciated and depends entirely on your own opinion and your personal satisfaction, moderated by the topics mentioned above.

Having said that, we’d recommend that for good service our travellers tip around:

      • US$10-20 per guest per day for a group guide
      • US$5-10 per guest per day for the general staff
      • US$5-10 per guest per day for a scout

Bearing in mind the issues above, the Gross National Income (GNI) is approximately US$3 per person per day in Zambia. This is a reflection of the average income of Zambia’s citizens.

Botswana

It’s much more common to tip with cash, with the preferred currency in Botswana being Botswana pula or, failing that, US dollars, South African rands, or even euros or GB pounds.

When to tip

We’re sometimes asked about when to give tips, and it’s an important question. The options are:

After each activity
At the end of each day
At the end of your stay

The answer is very clear: always tip just once, and always at the end of your stay at each safari lodge or camp.

Guides don’t expect a tip after each activity, and tipping this way would pressurise the guide to ‘perform’ for the guest who is tipping – whilst probably distorting the relationship between him/her and the guests as a whole. It would certainly put your fellow guests in a very difficult position if you were offering tips this frequently, and they were not.

How much to tip

Bear in mind that all we can offer here is guidance from our experience in Botswana. In the end, tipping depends on your personal opinion and your individual satisfaction – moderated by some understanding of the issues mentioned above.

Given that, we’d recommend that for good service, our travellers tip around:

  • US$10 per guest per day for a group guide
  • US$20 per guest per day for a private guide
  • US$5 per guest per day for mokoro polers, trackers or a butler
  • US$5 per guest per day for the general staff

To put these suggestions in perspective, bear in mind that the Gross National Income (GNI) is about US$17.84 per person per day in Botswana. This is a reflection of the average income of Botswana’s citizens.

Tanzinia

It’s most common to tip in cash, ideally Tanzanian shillings or US dollars. Although some camps offer the option to tip by credit card, this depends on their accounting practices and their ability to process cards. Tipping by card isn’t the norm in Tanzania, and it can make it difficult to direct your tips to specific members of staff.

When to tip

Another frequently asked question is the best time to give tips. There are three options:

After each activity
At the end of each day
At the end of your stay

Best practice is always to tip just once, and always at the end of your stay at each safari lodge or camp.

How much to tip

The amounts we suggest here are just guidelines based on our experience of safaris in Tanzania. Tipping is a matter of personal opinion and individual satisfaction – moderated by some understanding of the issues mentioned above.

Given that, we’d recommend that for good service, our travellers tip around:

  • US$8–10 per guest per day for a group guide
  • US$8–10 per guest per day for a private guide
  • US$8–10 per guest per day for the hotel or safari camp, which is then distributed amongst camp staff (excluding safari guides)
  • US$3–5 per city transfer

In reference to the impact on the economy, note that the gross national income (GNI) in Tanzania is about US$2.49 per person per day. This is a reflection of the average income of Tanzania’s citizens.

Egypt

Tipping is an essential part of the Egyptian economy, and it is a way to supplement the low wages that many service workers receive. In many cases, tips can make up a significant portion of a worker’s income. As a tourist, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of those who provide you with services by tipping generously.

How to Tip in Egypt

When it comes to tipping in Egypt, you have several options for payment. You can use US dollars, Egyptian pounds, or credit cards. However, it is best to carry small bills in Egyptian pounds, as many service providers may not have change for larger bills.

If you choose to use US dollars, keep in mind that the exchange rate may not be favorable, and you may end up paying more than necessary. It is also important to note that many service providers may not accept US dollars, especially outside of tourist areas.

When using a credit card, be sure to ask the service provider if they accept tips on the card. If not, be prepared to have cash on hand.

Tipping Etiquette in Egypt

In Egypt, it is customary to tip in cash. However, if you receive exceptional service from a hotel or restaurant, you may choose to add a tip to your credit card payment. When tipping, it is best to hand the money directly to the person providing the service, rather than leaving it on the table or in the room. This shows respect and appreciation for their work.

It is also important to note that haggling over the amount of a tip is considered rude in Egypt. It is best to agree on a price beforehand and stick to it.

Tipping Mistakes to Avoid in Egypt

One of the most common tipping mistakes in Egypt is not tipping at all. In Egypt, tipping is expected, and failure to do so can be considered rude or disrespectful. Another mistake is tipping too little. While it may seem like a small amount to you, it can make a big difference to service providers.
